Coronado CARES will have a TNR Program- Trap Neuter Return- for feral cats.  Feral cats are not domestic pets.  The difference is that feral cats have had little or no contact with humans and so they are fearful of us and cannot be adopted.  They have a home- the outdoors.  TNR ends reproduction, stabilizes feral cats' populations and improves cats' lives.  The behavior and stressors associated with mating- pregnancy, yowling and fighting- stop.

There are two large Navy bases on Coronado Island.  Feral cats roam at large there.  Feral cats hang out around the local hotels, condominium complexes, local hospital and roam the neighborhoods.  Coronado CARES will stabilize the feral cat population within these areas through the TNR Program.

Coronado CARES will have a Spay/Neuter Program for people who cannot afford to get their cats and dogs fixed.  The Spay/Neuter Program will be facilitated though both a voucher program for people who can pay a small amount but not the full amount for this service and a local spay/neuter program event in a low income neighborhood where people cannot afford to pay at all.

Coronado CARES will establish a Store Front Program which will entail a facility in the Coronado area to showcase stray and abandoned cats and dogs.  All animals in this facility will have a medical exam and their medical needs addressed by a veterinarian.  All animals will be spayed/neutered and microchipped.  The animals will then be ready for adoption.

Coronado CARES will have a Foster Program for both cats and dogs.  The program will consist of homes that will provide safety, nourishment and tender loving care for the animals while they wait to be adopted.  One aspect of the foster program will be the feeding around the clock of tiny kittens that have been separated from their mothers.  These tiny kittens are too young to survive on their own.  They need to be in foster homes where they will get the nourishment of milk through bottle feedings every two to four hours.  When people have to move away and are not able to take their animals with them, Coronado CARES will be able to provide a foster home for the animals until they can be adopted.  There is a special need for this service in our community which has two Navy bases.
