If you have a place in your heart and home for a dog, but you’re not prepared to adopt, consider fostering for Coronado CARES. Our Canine Foster Program allows dog lovers to bring homeless dogs into their homes on a temporary basis to prepare them for adoption. It’s a big commitment, however the fulfillment and sense of purpose you receive in knowing you’ve helped one more dog find its way into a safe, happy home is overwhelming each time a dog is adopted.
The length of time a dog in foster care greatly varies. It can be as little as a week, up to several months.
Coronado CARES Duties:
· + To medically prepare the dog for a new home- spay/neuter, vaccinate, de-worm, flea treat, groom and evaluate behavior.
· + Pay for all expenses, including supplies, veterinary care, grooming and food.
· + Provide opportunities for exposure to potential adopters.
· + Provide mentoring and moral support throughout fostering.
Foster Home Duties:
+ Provide a loving stable environment for the foster dog.
+ Socialization- daily walks, trips to pet store, etc.
+ Day-to-day care- feeding, grooming, exercise.
·+ Basic obedience to include housebreaking. Coronado CARES encourage the practice of positive reinforcement.
+ Provide updates on the dog’s behavioral and health progress.
+ Be willing to transport or allow a Coronado CARES representative to transport the dog to adoption events.
+ Assist in choosing the adoptive home, as the foster parent tends to know the dog best.
